i've been using tiling WMs for almost 5 years now. I mean what will you do when your macbook touchpad gave up on you?
let's look at the options available to me ( in early 2008 )
1. ditch the macbook , leave it to rot
=> i'm not going to do that , no seriously never
2. get into the nearest mac store and service center ( which at that time is about 150 km or for you non-metric guys out there is about 93 miles away from my house)
=> seeing that the nearest one took almost 6+ hours driving back and forth from my hometown, it won't become a very effective approach.
3. grab a usb mouse
=> i did this , for about a week
4. grab a tiling wm, get rid of the usb mouse and start spreading the word of salvation to friends on ze 'net
=> this is exactly what i did
first, i took awesome wm tinkering with it for almost a month due to my zero experience in lua, i'm using it for more than a year then switch to i3-wm ( because it's a lot simpler and it does everything i love in awesome) and it's been my favorite wm until the same 2006 macbook died in 2010.
i got me-self a lot of dinosaur era laptops, a new desktop PC , a new mac mini, and a new macbook back in 2010 and i'm starting to try a lot of different wms ( from ratpoison to dwm). One name came out on top , it's scrotwm (now spectrwm) because i love its name ( sounds ballsy ) , and its even simpler to configure
in 2012 , i tried a lot more wms ( something like subtle, echinus, xmonad, etc) and i took dwm and wmfs2 as my primary wm because i wanted to replicate beastie and ok100 dwm setup , and arpinux wmfs2 setup ( those setups are so boss) until this date all of my dwm and wmfs2 configs are heavily inspired from those dudes' desktop.
Last month however , i sniff a growing popularity of bspwm, it got a lot of new features from dwm or monsterwm. Then i watched a screencast by this earsplit / bill indelicato guy , and i saw a godly-setup like i have never ever seen before. Immediately i took bspwm , took his configs, modify his scripts and keybindings to fit my taste and before i know it , it's been my primary wm for almost 2 weeks now.
